Skip spooning!
Spoon-on-the-surface is an art to imitate a scared minnow or some other bait fish skittering across the surface of the water when using a broad spoon. Here's how; cast as far as possible with your rod, keeping the rod tip pointed toward the spoon.
Just before it hits the water, reel in rapidly and when the spoon hits the water, pull the rod tip up and keep the tip high over head.
Retrieve rapidly with the rod high. If the retrieve is started just before your spoon hits the water, it will be easy to keep it skipping across the surface. This system is very effective during a slick calm at night or when the sky has a heavy overcast.
