No More Room

The ambient air temperature had been in the low 100's for years and tempers flared throughout the 50 billion people on earth. Nations were panicking, and humans became nomadic. Oxygen, water, and food were scarce; earth was drying up. The only places capable of providing the necessities for life were in mountain areas. It was cooler, water was available, and plant life was still green.

Jason and his wife Patricia realized something had to be done if humanity were to survive. They were two of the most brilliant scientists and visionaries on earth. For years they had secretly directed a team of professionals from selected countries in developing a way to save the best of everything; animal, plant, and humans. Mountainous areas were the focal points and the best of all scientific minds were there. Through their concentrated efforts each had built an identical biosphere one mile in diameter at identical elevations above sea level. The ultimate in technology was concentrated in each sphere. Panic!

As expected, hoards of people realized something important was happening in the mountains and started screaming, "We have been tricked. Run, run and get to the mountains!" With an explosion seen around the world, humanity erupted and every human being started to realize the intensity of the situation. Each person, hoping to find relief from their agony, stampeded towards the mountains. The word was out that a little of everything found in nature had been reduced in size and placed in proper perspective inside the sphere.

All products to sustain life and allow progress for a new world would be manufactured within the sphere. Each sphere said they would welcome any person wanting to be a true pioneer in the new world; but the sphere was impenetrable and would not allow any human to enter until stamped ACCEPTABLE by the new world standards.

Computer selection!

Those who desired to enter the new world were instructed to leave all worldly possessions at the disposal center before entering the size reduction room. After entering, they would be examined biologically and electronically to weed out the sick and undesirables. This process would occur simultaneously as they were shrunk in size. If rejection occurred, their bodies would be tossed into disposal bins and dumped outside the sphere (the bins filled rapidly). In effect, there was no guarantee of an entire family making it to the inside of the sphere. The biosphere sites in the participating nations were networked by computers, which simultaneously processed the populations as they passed through in groups of 1000. The creators of these new worlds wanted to make sure the spheres contained the same amount of people, wild life, insects, and marine life for comparison as the worlds grew.

The final day!

People rushing to the sites died from starvation, heat, angry mobs, and panic. Even the mountainous areas were beginning to warm up and forewarned that life on earth would end. The frightened ones had smiles on their faces and were filled with dreams about a new world as they struggled to reach the entrance doors. As thousands more approached, Jason and his wife pushed through the crowd of people to reach the size reduction room. They stumbled and reached for the doorknob.
At that very same moment The computer network at each site sealed the entrances, simultaneously turned out the lights, and flashed a large sign in front of the buildings for all to see.
