Hellgrammite have a couple of pincers on their heads that can give a good nip, if not careful. The pincers can latch on to a fish you just caught. There is a myth, by some old salts, that the hellgrammite catches the fish instead of you catching the fish. This myth was developed because they will pinch and hang on to your fish until the hook is removed. The tip on using this bug,  is how to hook and fish them. Don't hook them in the head or tail; hook them only once thru the segmented body. Fish hellgrammites by bumping them along the bottom with the current, not against the current. This provides a natural movement of the hellgrammite as it moves from spot to spot.
