It sounds like a war chant, but it's not;
it's just a percoid remora, a sucker type of fish! When you are "percoid" in the language of
fish, it means you are bony and come from a large family of fishes such as perch, bass, and sunfish.Remoras have long bodies, are whitish grey in color with a wide black stripe from their mouth extending along their back and through the tail. They possess an oval shaped disc on the top of their head that blends into the sleek body. This transforms the fish into a streamlined passenger when attached by its sucker disc to anything that moves. Incidently, the oval shaped sucker disc is divided into movable cross-ridges which create many small shallow partitions that raise up and form individual vacuum chambers that hold the fish to its host. A remora releases itself by moving forward to depress the cross ridges releasing the vacuum. It's like having a miniature venetian blind that opens and closes. Remora are harmless to humans and are not blood-suckers as some land-lubbers may think. Remora average 1½ feet in length up to 3½ feet, depending upon the species. Five of the most common remora are found in the gulf waters. They are marlinsucker remora, sharksucker remora, whalesucker remora, whitesucker remora, and the remora.
